Fitness Event Recap
Mason Recreation hosted the 3rd Annual Indoor Triathlon on Saturday, February 27 at the AFC. In this unique multi-sport event, athletes swim as far as they can in 15 minutes, ride as far as they can on a stationary bike in 20 minutes, and run as far as they can on a treadmill in 20 minutes. The winners covered the most distance in all three events combined.

Be My Fit Valentine 2016
Mason Recreation held our 3rd annual Be My Fit Valentine event on Thursday, February 11 in the RAC Cage Gym. Eleven couples competed in partner fitness challenges, working their hardest to be named the Be My Fit Valentine champion.
The evening started with a new warm-up challenge, where competitors circled up, then one teammate ran around the circle, through their partner’s legs, and had to grab an item in the circle. There of course weren’t enough items for everyone, so like musical chairs, the team(s) who didn’t get an item were out. The last team standing finished the event in first place.
The competition went on to our signature events, including the mine field, back-to-back wall squats, and the 3-legged race. We also included a hearty game of tug of war and dodgeball as a large group to gather points for each team, because we are stronger together than we are apart. Developing an exercise community helps to encourage everyone to reach their goals.
When the night ended, we crowned two champions: Emily Ruffa & Steven Stavrakis of co-ed team Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots, and Sarah Solano & Julia Czarnecki of all-female team Samoan Rousey. Congratulations to our reigning Be My Fit Valentine champs and to all competitors!
Fall 2015 Power Meet
Mason Recreation held our Fall 2015 Power Meet on Saturday, November 7. This year 17 males and 4 females challenged themselves to squat, bench press, and deadlift. Winners were crowned for each weight class, and Josiah Vivero and Gabrielle Tucker were the male and female overall pound-for-pound champions. Click here for pictures from the competition. 2015 Welcome Week
Mason Fitness participated in the Welcome Week Get Connected2Mason event outside the Johnson Center on Monday, August 31. We were thrilled to meet everyone interested in our fitness classes, employment opportunities, events, and competitions. We look forward to a semester of seeing everyone who stopped by to meet us.
2015 Indoor Triathlon
Mason Recreation hosted the second annual Indoor Triathlon at the Aquatic and Fitness Center on Saturday, February 28. Unlike a traditional outdoor triathlon where participants see who can cover three specific distances in the shortest amount of time, all participants in the Indoor Triathlon race for the same amount of time. Everyone swam 15 minutes in the competition pool, biked 20 minutes on our stationary bikes, and ran 20 minutes on our treadmills. The male and female athlete who covered the highest total combined distance on all three stages were the winners.

Be My Fit Valentine
Love was in the air February 10 at the RAC for Mason Recreation’s annual Be My Fit Valentine competition. This friendly partner fitness competition pitted couples against each other in four categories of fitness events: Communication, Trust, Sharing, and Heart. Each category included a themed set of exercises, and the couples had to work together to succeed in the shortest amount of time. After the Wobble dance warm-up, couples participated in exercises that included blindfolded wheel barrow race through a “mine field,” leap frog, moving squats, 3-legged race, burpee inchworm, and many others. The couples with the lowest total score were awarded the Be My Fit Valentine champion trophy.

On February 3rd, George Mason Recreation partnered with Mason Dining and Student Health Services to conduct the first free health and fitness screening of 2015. This event was free to students, faculty, staff, and Mason Recreation community members. More than 70 individuals participated in the first screening this year. During the screening, these individuals were assessed on their posture, blood pressure, heart rate, BMI, body fat percentages, height, and weight, and they were given nutritional information from Lois Durant, Mason Dining’s registered dietitian. Participants were also instructed on how to use foam rollers properly. Mason Recreation events were on display, and participants had the chance to sign up for other Mason Recreation events in the future. Mason Recreation Personal Trainers were also on hand to teach stretching and strengthening exercises to participants and to answer any other strength and conditioning questions individuals had.

Fall Free Fitness Screenings
Throughout the fall semester, Mason Recreation hosted 3 free fitness screenings on Tuesday evenings. There were more than 171 individuals screened this semester. The screenings provided the Mason community with the opportunity to meet with a personal trainer to assess posture, check for muscle imbalances, and learn stretching and strengthening exercises to help their bodies function efficiently. We also measured height and weight and provided participants with their BMI and body fat percentages. Other campus departments partnered with us to add even more value to the fitness screenings. The Campus Dining Services registered dietitian was available to answer nutrition questions and to demonstrate appropriate portions and food selections. Student Health Services nurses checked blood pressure and informed visitors about all the services they offer. WAVES presented information on their wellness programs and the services they offer.

Mason Recreation held our fall Power Meet on Saturday, November 8, in the RAC. Four women and 19 men attempted three lifts: squat, bench press, and dead lift. First, second, and third place awards were given for males and females in each weight class. Additionally, Sarah Cogswell and James Loo won the pound-for-pound titles. Full results and photos can be found at http://recreation.gmu.edu/fitness/powermeet/. The Spring Power Meet will be held on Saturday, April 18, 9:00am at the RAC. Registration will open on March 23, 2015.
This fall, 57 participants have accepted the Iron Mason challenge. Instead of racing against other participants, Iron Mason encourages participants to step up their physical activity throughout the semester. The challenge is to swim 5 miles or row 8,050 meters, bike 150 miles, and run or walk 50 miles between September 1 and December 1. Different status levels are awarded for each time participants meet this challenge: gold for one tour, platinum for 2 tours, and diamond for 3 tours.
After the first two weeks of challenge, our overall leader—and cycling leader—is Evan Schweitzer. His goal is to ride 450 miles by December 1, and he’s well on his way. Ashley Whimpey is our current swim leader, working toward her goal to stay on pace every week, and Andie Lahey is the lead rower, also focusing on staying on pace and finishing on time. Colby Snyder is the lead runner. He’s working toward keeping a regular schedule to chip away at his goals every day. His plan is to keep up with it to complete two tours and reach platinum status by December 1.
Wellness Wednesday at Skyline Fitness Center
WAVES invited Mason Fitness to partner with them for the September 17 Wellness Wednesday. Both groups set up in the common area in Skyline Fitness Center to display all our ways to promote wellness. Mason Fitness conducted postural assessments and overhead squat assessments, which both show participants which muscles need to stretch and which muscles need to strengthen to achieve muscle balance. Tips presented by the personal training staff included carrying your backpack on both shoulders so one shoulder does not dip lower than the other, taking a break more often when working on your laptop so the back of your neck does not become overstretched leading to a forward head position, and making the time to let your body recover. Mason yoga instructor Bernardo demonstrated yoga poses, flows, and stretches that can help your body recover and rejuvenate. The Mason yoga schedule can be found on this website under Group Fitness.
Chalk It Up
Mason Fitness participated in Chalk It Up, presented by Mason Cares, on September 8. Mason Cares Graduate Assistant Rachelle Thompson described the event’s goal as a way to educate students about the variety of offices at Mason that promote mental health and wellness. More than 300 students came through and leaned about resources that can help students discover coping strategies when mid-terms, finals, or other events in life begin to stress them out. As one of the exhibitors, Mason Fitness presented our programs, which serve as great stress busters and boosters to overall happiness and well-being. While the weather forced most of the event inside SUB 1, Mason Cares representatives stayed outside encouraging students to write messages of hope on the sidewalk with chalk. The event was a part of National Suicide Prevention Week, which also included the Send Silence Packing backpack display of 1,100 backpacks representing the number of lives lost to suicide on college campuses throughout the United States.
Free Weeks of Gold Access Classes
This year, Mason Fitness classes are categorized as Green access or Gold access. We kicked off the semester offering a free trial of Gold access classes to students and Mason Rec members from August 25 to September 6. Many participants came out to try our classes at the RAC and AFC. In response to your feedback, we are offering an even greater variety of classes and locations this semester. New this year is Shotokan Karate, which emphasizes techniques, forms (kata), and sets (drills), all related by motion and principles. Other Martial Arts and Self-Defense classes included with Gold access are Capoeira, Krav Maga, Akido, and Internal Power Secrets of Tai Chi. New this year Yoga, Pilates, Martial Arts, and Self-Defense classes are held in the AFC and the RAC with added class times 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. Once Gold access is purchased, you can attend unlimited Gold classes for the entire semester. Drop-in rates also are available. Green access classes—Group Fitness and Indoor Cycling classes—still are free the entire semester to students and Mason Rec members. We also have added new times and locations for the Green access classes. Zumba classes are now available at the RAC at 5:15 on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and Group Fitness and Indoor Cycling classes are now offered at 2:00 at the AFC. All experience and ability levels are welcome in Mason Fitness classes. If it is your first time, tell the instructor, and he or she will help you get set up and guide you along the way.
ACE Personal Trainer Prep Course
Mason Fitness is again offering our ACE Personal Trainer test preparation class. This semester we have 14 attendees who are excited to take the journey toward becoming an ACE-certified personal trainer. The 16-week class includes lectures, slide presentations, and practical work. Everyone is having fun learning not only what it takes to pass the exam, but also how to spread the love of fitness. The class will be offered again in the spring, and occasionally is offered in the summer. It is open to students, faculty, staff, and the community.
