Job Description

The Recreation Camp Counselor will provide camper supervision, event planning, and organization for children 6 – 10 years of age in a summer day camp program. The Recreation Camp Counselor will plan and implement activities including, but not limited to, arts and crafts, music, sports, games, swimming, nature walks, and specific themed events.

This position will have the opportunity to gain a variety of experiences through working with Mason Recreation and the George Mason community. The camp calendar will run Mon – Fri June 26 – Aug 11 (No camp July 4th). Shifts will take place between 7am – 1pm, and 12:30pm – 6:30pm daily. Interviewing will occur during the spring semester. Additional training time will be required mid-June. exact dates to be determined. During the hiring and training process the potential for advancement to Lead Counselor may arise. Duties as Counselors may include, but are not limited to:

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Represent Mason Recreation’s mission and vision.
  • Collaborate with students, interns, graduate, undergraduate and professional staff on planning, conduction and assessment of program.
  • Plan and assess games/crafts geared towards the weekly themes needs using best practices and emerging trend.
  • Assist in promotion of Camp program to George Mason campus community and Fairfax community.
  • Assist Camp Director and Camp Coordinator in program needs.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians of participants as needed.

Additional and/or special projects may be assigned as needed. Requires walking or standing frequently; occasional sitting for long periods of time; occasional lifting of objects up to 20lbs; and frequent lifting or carrying of objects up to 10lbs.

Requirements:

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Pursuing a degree in recreation, teaching, early childhood education, or another closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with children and/or recreation activities. 6 months experience or one year elementary education or child development courses can be substituted.
  • Strong communication skills with children, parents, peers, and community.
  • Excellent organization, time management, and planning skills.
  • Willingness to adapt and work in high-energy environment.
  • All persons selected for employment must pass a background investigation and potential medical screening (TB).
  • Where all candidates are equally qualified, George Mason University students will be given priority in consideration.
