AFC construction set for Spring 2023

Posted: March 9, 2022 at 3:46 pm, Last Updated: July 6, 2022 at 12:54 pm

Updated May 4, 2022

Mason Recreation previously announced a period of construction at the AFC set to begin in March 2023 that would close the facility through the summer. Some of the construction projects to be accomplished during this period include retiling the competition pool, installing new skylights, and replacing the pool bulkheads.

We have received new information and now expect the project to progress in a phased progression, allowing some parts of the AFC to remain open while others are closed for construction. The project is estimated to start late Spring 2023 and be completed over the next few years.

Mason Rec will continue to provide updates on the AFC construction project as information becomes available.

Mason Recreation students and members,

This message is to make you aware of a period of construction that the Aquatic and Fitness Center will be undergoing in the next year. Beginning March 20, 2023, the AFC will be closed for a major reconstruction project, with some of the major projects listed below:

  • Installation of new tile within the competition pool
  • Installation of new skylights
  • Replacement of bulkheads in pool
  • Replacement of roof
  • Replacement of exterior facility doors
  • Repair lights in pool area
  • Replacement of fitness floor
  • Facility painting
  • Installation of new elevator
  • Update to fire emergency response system

Construction is set to last through the summer, with plans to reopen the AFC in September 2023. During that period, the Recreation Athletic Complex and Skyline Fitness Center will remain available for use for students, members, and guests.

As many are about to renew and purchase annual memberships that will be active during the time of the AFC closure, we wanted our patrons to have the information they need to make an informed decision on the best membership term for them.

While our memberships provide full access to all three recreation facilities, as well as multiple outdoor fields and courts, we recognize that many of our patrons who prefer our aquatic amenities may feel the brunt of the impact of this closure.

For members who prefer to utilize the AFC for our aquatic offerings, monthly membership may be preferable as it will allow for more flexibility during this time.

Monthly membership pricing: Faculty/Staff – $30 | Alumni – $50 | Community – $75

If you have any questions, please reach out to masonrec@gmu.edu.

Yours in health and well-being,

Mason Recreation
