Mason Recreation memberships, including student memberships, are bound to the following general terms and conditions of facility access and use. Because there are slight variations in facility rules for the Activities Building (AB), Aquatic & Fitness Center (AFC), Skyline Fitness Center, and the Recreation & Athletic Complex (RAC), patrons are required to observe posted rules within each facility.
Anyone not adhering to these rules may be asked to leave the premises.
Facility Policies
- Mason Recreation memberships, with active status, permit the patron to access Mason Recreation’s facilities (AB, AFC, RAC, Skyline Fitness Center, and Outdoor Venues) during their normal business hours. All Mason Recreation facilities adhere to the emergency management policies, procedures and guidelines of the Environment Health & Safety Department including training exercises, planning, and outreach activities which patrons must comply with.

- All patrons must present their Mason ID or Rec Membership ID to check in at any of the facilities. Two (2) entrances per semester are allowed when no ID card is present. Mason Recreation reserves the right to terminate a membership, with or without refund, in the event that a patron attempts to fraudulently access Mason Recreation’s facilities, or aids in the fraudulent access of another individual. Students displaying the above behavior may be suspended from accessing any or all of Mason Recreation’s facilities for any length of time.

Mason Recreation requires that all of our patrons adhere to a dress code policy for personal hygiene, health, and safety. The dress code policy is included in policy signs within all of our facilities. It is important for patrons and Mason Recreation staff to have policies that are uniformly enforceable.
The dress code is as follows:
- Tops and shorts/pants.
- No clothing that can damage upholstered equipment permitted.
- Athletic, non-marking shoes with a full back and closed toe. No Crocs or Yeezy foam-runners are permitted.
Mason Recreation staff have the discretion to make decisions regarding permitted attire particularly when the safety of participants is compromised or there is the potential for significant damage to equipment.
We ask that our patrons be diligent with cleaning and hygiene in order to prevent the spread of disease.
The athletic pants/shorts rationale is as follows:
- Pants or shorts with belts, studs, rivets, buttons, or exposed zippers can tear the vinyl on the equipment. Once the vinyl is torn, germs and bacteria can grow within the padding, posing a potential health risk to patrons. It is also costly to frequently replace torn pads and sleeves.
- Jeans of any kind are not permitted. Jeans often have studs or rivets as well as exposed zippers which tear the vinyl. Jeans also do not allow the body to properly ventilate while exercising.
- Cargo pants that have studs, rivets, buttons, or exposed zippers are not permitted. If the cargo pants do not have the aforementioned qualities, they are permitted to wear.
The athletic, non-marking shoes policy rationale is as follows:
- Shoes protect the feet from equipment that may be dropped accidentally.
- Wearing athletic shoes prevents risk of numerous injuries. The upper material on shoes can also prevent injury if a heavy object is dropped on the foot.
- Backless or partially backed shoes can easily slip off, posing injury risk and shoes that do not cover the forefoot do not protect the entire foot from injury.
- All participants must be at least 16 years of age.
- Appropriate workout attire is required. This includes a top, athletic pants/shorts, and fully enclosed non-marking sole athletic shoes. (e.g., No Crocs or Yeezy foam-runners.)
- All personal belongings must be stored in a cubby or day locker. The Aquatic and Fitness Center is not responsible for lost or stolen property.

- Shoes off are acceptable within this space only in the absence of exercise equipment (e.g. no dumbbells, medicine balls, kettlebells, weighted bars/plates are being used while shoes off).

- If you cancel a scheduled lesson without 24 hours notice or do not show up for your lesson, you do not get a make-up for that lesson. The instructor will notify the Aquatics Admin Staff, and that lesson will be deducted from your account. If the instructor needs to cancel the lesson, it should be done at least 24 hours in advance. You will not be penalized if your instructor cancels.
- Please email [email protected] if you find that your instructor is canceling frequently
- If you arrive late for your lesson, you will still need to conclude your lesson at the regularly scheduled time. If the instructor is late, the lesson will continue for the full 30 or 45 minute time.
- Instructors will only wait 15 minutes for late arrivals. After 15 minutes, the lesson will be determined a “no show” and will be counted as a used lesson.
- To get best results, lessons should be conducted once every week. As several of our instructors are students, they may go home during University scheduled breaks such as the following: Fall Break, Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer. Fall and Spring are only a week long. Winter and Summer are over a month which may impact lessons from occurring regularly. When scheduling your lessons, please plan accordingly around breaks so that all lessons can be completed before breaks occur.
- Goggles are HIGHLY recommended. If you forget goggles, we sell goggles at our front desk.
- There is no swimming before or after class unless you are a member and for minors it is during minro access time. Please communicate with your instructor if you are a member (the instructor will verify after the lesson). Please keep other children out of the pool.
- Parents and/or guardians must remain on the deck during the lesson.
- All private and semi-private swim lessons will expire after six (6) months from the day of purchase.
