Congratulations to the RAC for winning both the fan favorite and judge’s votes for the best decorated.  Competitive sports came in second in the fan favorite poll and the Aquatics area received second place in the judge’s poll.  Thanks to everyone that voted and participated in decorating!

Halloween Activities

Halloween Activities at the AFC and Skyline

To help get into the Halloween spirit the AFC and Skyline are hosting two activities.  Stop by the AFC and Skyline to guess how much candy is in the jar!  Patrons can vote until 12p on Monday, October 31st.  The winner will receive the jar of candy!  For all basketball fans, stop by Skyline on Monday, October 31st to compete in the free throw shooting contest from 7p-8p.  The individual that makes the most free throws in a row will win a giant candy bar!  We hope these activities help you with the Halloween spirit!

ICE HOCKEY- Ice Hockey Club took to the road this weekend for a three game match up after a tough loss at home last weekend against GW. This weekend the team turned the tables and went undefeated going 2-0-1! The team faced Robert Morris (9-3, W), West Virginia (3-3, T), and Penn State Altoona (3-1, W). The team racked up a total of 15 goals on the weekend. Andrew Baker, David Guinee, and Aaron Shields were highlighted as scoring their first goals of the season!

W. ULTIMATE- Women’s Club Ultimate traveled to NC State University this past weekend. The young team went 3-3 on the weekend. Mason played UVA (4-13, L), Duke (7-6, W), UNC-B (10-4, W), University of South Carolina (3-8, L), James Madison University (3-12, L), Appalachian State (13-6, W). Captain, Rebecca Curtis was quoted, “We played some really incredible teams this weekend, and even when the score wasn’t in our favor, every person on our team continued to work hard!” Gaby Auza was also noted as capturing her first ever Callahan!

W. RUGBY- Women’s Rugby competed against University of Maryland this weekend (19-29, L). The team hopes to redeem themselves this upcoming weekend as conference quarterfinals is set to kickoff.

M. ULTIMATE- Men’s Club Ultimate participated in the Charity Tournament in Richmond, Virginia this past weekend. Mason played VCU (7-13, L), University of Richmond (13-9, W), Appalachian State (9-15, L), Navy (13-10, W). Mason looks forward to their next competition Nov.5-6 at home! We are anticipating President Cabrera, along with a huge crowd!

SOFTBALL- Club Softball competed in a 3-game series at University of Maryland (8-12 L, 3-11 L, 0-1 L). In the first game, Hailey Barchick went 3-4 with 2 RBIs and one run scored, while Krysalyn Gerhardt went 3-3 with one run scored. Starting pitcher, Erica Toxey, was injured in the third inning of the first game leaving back-up pitcher, Danielle Chontos, to step up to the mound for the first time this season. Due to pitch count and injuries, the team was forced to forfeit their third game. It was highlighted by the team captain, that Shelby Russel made a great diving catch in center field, and catcher, Lauren Ritter threw a runner out at second on a stolen base attempt to keep two runners from scoring position. The team hopes to redeem themselves this Saturday (10/29) vs Navy.

VOLLEYBALL- Women’s Club Volleyball competed in their second tournament of the season at James Madison University. The team went 3-2-1 on the weekend. Results are listed below.

RUNNING- Running Club traveled to Lehigh University to compete at the Mid-Atlantic Regionals Championships. Alayna Bigalbal, brought home a medal in the 6k, after coming in 8th out of 270 females athletes, with a time of 23:10. Jordan Shimer, led the men’s team in the 8k, with a time of 28:45. CYCLING- Charles Coffey represented Cycling Club this weekend at the USA Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals! Despite the wind, snow, and mud, Charles had a great showing and placed 46 out of 64.

W. VOLLEYABLL– The women’s volleyball team hosted a Fall Invitational, their first tournament of the semester, this past Saturday. They started strong beating Johns Hopkins B (25-19, 25-21) and Longwood A (25-19, 25-23) before losing to ODU (23-25, 18-25). Keeping their spirits up, Mason went on to defeat Johns Hopkins A (22-25, 25-17, 15-4) in a comeback victory in the semi-finals. They faced ODU again in the finals, this time taking them to three games, but could not come out with the win, losing (25-23, 23-25, 8-15). Lindsay Simmons served five points straight points to gain a nine point lead over Johns Hopkins A in the third game of the semi-finals. Vanessa Frans got a crucial kill, despite being triple blocked, in the final match vs. ODU to gain back the serve and bring the score to 21-23. Lastly, outside hitter, Zimako Chucks, got two consecutive kills in the second set of the final match to keep Mason alive, though it wasn’t enough to take down the tough opponent.

 

TRIATHLON– The Triathlon team competed in an event hosted by Liberty University at Smith Mountain Lake State Park. Among their competitors were Liberty, Georgetown, and George Washington. Emily Jakob led the team with a time of 2:42:39 followed by Sonja Arnold-Keifer (2:43:40), Elizabeth Dupuis (3:31:33), Erik Stafira (2:49:19), Maddie Treiber (3:32:46), and Vannette Gonzalez (3:53:09).

 

QUIDDITCH– The Quidditch team competed at “A Cup Worth Fighting For” in Charlottesville, VA. They started off with a win over VCU with a score of 160*-20. They then lost a close game to the Richmond Ravens 70-100* but stayed positive and went on to beat UVA 140*-30. Unfortunately, they lost their last match to VCU 80-110*. This tournament gave a lot of their new players an opportunity to gain experience and it was amazing to see how much they have learned and improved since the start of the semester.

 

ICE HOCKEY-The Hockey team was in action this weekend at the Kettler Iceplex where they took on George Washington. Mason lost to George Washington 7-5 in a very high scoring affair. Tyler Dagostino led Mason in goals netting three to get a hat trick and Kevin Diner scored two goals of his own. The team looks to rebound this weekend on their three game road trip.

 

TRAP & SKEET– Trap and Skeet competed at the 10th Annual Hokie Invitational at the Fun Gun Farm in Pulaski, VA on Saturday and Sunday. Among their competitors were Virginia Tech, Virginia Military Institute, and the University of Delaware. Although Virginia Tech was the victor on both days, Derek Vacco took second in men’s Sporting Clays and first in men’s Skeet. Additionally, Stephanie Treme took first in women’s Sporting Clays, second in women’s skeet, first in women’s Doubles Trap, and first in women’s high overall.

 

FIELD HOCKEY-The Field Hockey team competed at Johns Hopkins University and Georgetown University this weekend. GMU dominated JH 5-0 with goals scored by Annie Rutherford (1), Shannon Lobb (2), and Robin Gordon (2). On Sunday, the team put up a tough fight and ended the game tied 0-0 against Georgetown.

 M. VOLLEYBALL– Men’s Volleyball competed at the 10th Annual Derrick Beckner Memorial Tournament at JMU this past weekend. The team played 5 matches: Remix Squad (Lost in 2 sets), Salisbury (Won in 2 sets), Pittsburgh A (Lost in 2 sets), ODU (Won in 2 sets), and Pittsburgh B (Lost in 2 sets). The Volleyball team looks forward to hosting their next tournament on Nov.5th.

M. ULTIMATE– Men’s Ultimate Frisbee traveled to UMBC this past weekend to compete in the school’s Fall Flight tournament. Results from the tournament are listed below.

  • UMBC X (13-5, W) vs. Towson Y (12-9 L)
  • UMBC Y (13-10, L)

The team had an overall successful weekend and looks forward to competing in their next tournament at home on Nov.5th.

 

EQUESTRIAN– Equestrian was back at it this weekend competing at the Towson University IHSA Show. The team came in 4th place overall with 30 points, however had a successful showing and placed well individually. Individual results are posted below.

W. BASKETBALL– Women’s Club Basketball had an outstanding opening weekend! The team traveled to ODU and played 5 games, sweeping them all! W&M (54-19, W), Christopher Newport (56-26, W), ODU (41-39, W), Radford (37-24, W), UNCW (51-24, W). The ladies hope to keep the winning streak alive in their next set of games.

W. RUGBY– Women’s Rugby Club traveled to GW this past weekend (19-49, L). The team will look to rebound this Saturday (10/22) at University of Maryland.

FOOTBALL– Club Football hosted University of Pittsburgh this past Saturday, as their last home game of the year. The team had a packed stadium filled with family and friends to cheer them on during their family/alumni weekend game. Coming off a 3-game losing streak the team had some fire under them, and it showed as they dominated Pitt for a score of 42-12 (Win)! Xavier Savannah looked to be the MVP of the game, recording 3 touchdowns.

FENCING– Fencing Club opened their season at University of Maryland at the CHAOS Open Invitational. The team had a great showing. The most notable highlight came from Kim Wong, who placed 1st out of 26 for the Gold medal win. This was Wong’s first college tournament and the first individual Gold medal for GMU in two years!

CREW- Crew Club hosted a HUGE event this past weekend at Sandy Run Rowing Facility. In attendance were UNC, Virginia Tech, and UVA; that’s just to name a few. With great weather and some great competition the team took to the water. Listed below are results for the weekend.

W. SOCCER– Women’s Club Soccer took on John Hopkins this past Saturday. After a tough 90 minutes, GMU came up on top (2-1, W)! Goals were scored by the Blondin twins, Maggie and Katie!

M. SOCCER– Men’s Club Soccer also competed against John Hopkins and came out with a win (3-2)!

POWERLIFTING– Powerlifting Club traveled to Atlanta, GA this past week to compete at the USAPL Raw Nationals. The team had an amazing showing! Results are listed below.

120+ kg Weight Class Teen 3 Division

JT Malaschebich: Placing 2/3 Teen 3 Division; Best Lifts: 462.9lbs Squat, 347.2lbs Bench

Highlights of the event include, Ray Williams, who became the first man to squat 1005lbs raw and holds the current squat record for the 120+ kg weight class Open Division. Alumni and MPC Coach Gabrielle Mamani re-broke her Junior American deadlift record with 398.8lbs for the 57kg weight class Junior Division.
