Oct. 14-16

W. VOLLEYABLL– The women’s volleyball team hosted a Fall Invitational, their first tournament of the semester, this past Saturday. They started strong beating Johns Hopkins B (25-19, 25-21) and Longwood A (25-19, 25-23) before losing to ODU (23-25, 18-25). Keeping their spirits up, Mason went on to defeat Johns Hopkins A (22-25, 25-17, 15-4) in a comeback victory in the semi-finals. They faced ODU again in the finals, this time taking them to three games, but could not come out with the win, losing (25-23, 23-25, 8-15). Lindsay Simmons served five points straight points to gain a nine point lead over Johns Hopkins A in the third game of the semi-finals. Vanessa Frans got a crucial kill, despite being triple blocked, in the final match vs. ODU to gain back the serve and bring the score to 21-23. Lastly, outside hitter, Zimako Chucks, got two consecutive kills in the second set of the final match to keep Mason alive, though it wasn’t enough to take down the tough opponent.

 

TRIATHLON– The Triathlon team competed in an event hosted by Liberty University at Smith Mountain Lake State Park. Among their competitors were Liberty, Georgetown, and George Washington. Emily Jakob led the team with a time of 2:42:39 followed by Sonja Arnold-Keifer (2:43:40), Elizabeth Dupuis (3:31:33), Erik Stafira (2:49:19), Maddie Treiber (3:32:46), and Vannette Gonzalez (3:53:09).

 

QUIDDITCH– The Quidditch team competed at “A Cup Worth Fighting For” in Charlottesville, VA. They started off with a win over VCU with a score of 160*-20. They then lost a close game to the Richmond Ravens 70-100* but stayed positive and went on to beat UVA 140*-30. Unfortunately, they lost their last match to VCU 80-110*. This tournament gave a lot of their new players an opportunity to gain experience and it was amazing to see how much they have learned and improved since the start of the semester.

 

ICE HOCKEY-The Hockey team was in action this weekend at the Kettler Iceplex where they took on George Washington. Mason lost to George Washington 7-5 in a very high scoring affair. Tyler Dagostino led Mason in goals netting three to get a hat trick and Kevin Diner scored two goals of his own. The team looks to rebound this weekend on their three game road trip.

 

TRAP & SKEET– Trap and Skeet competed at the 10th Annual Hokie Invitational at the Fun Gun Farm in Pulaski, VA on Saturday and Sunday. Among their competitors were Virginia Tech, Virginia Military Institute, and the University of Delaware. Although Virginia Tech was the victor on both days, Derek Vacco took second in men’s Sporting Clays and first in men’s Skeet. Additionally, Stephanie Treme took first in women’s Sporting Clays, second in women’s skeet, first in women’s Doubles Trap, and first in women’s high overall.

 

FIELD HOCKEY-The Field Hockey team competed at Johns Hopkins University and Georgetown University this weekend. GMU dominated JH 5-0 with goals scored by Annie Rutherford (1), Shannon Lobb (2), and Robin Gordon (2). On Sunday, the team put up a tough fight and ended the game tied 0-0 against Georgetown.

 M. VOLLEYBALL– Men’s Volleyball competed at the 10th Annual Derrick Beckner Memorial Tournament at JMU this past weekend. The team played 5 matches: Remix Squad (Lost in 2 sets), Salisbury (Won in 2 sets), Pittsburgh A (Lost in 2 sets), ODU (Won in 2 sets), and Pittsburgh B (Lost in 2 sets). The Volleyball team looks forward to hosting their next tournament on Nov.5th.

M. ULTIMATE– Men’s Ultimate Frisbee traveled to UMBC this past weekend to compete in the school’s Fall Flight tournament. Results from the tournament are listed below.

  • St. Mary’s University (13-1, W) vs. Towson X (13-9 W)
  • UMBC X (13-5, W) vs. Towson Y (12-9 L)
  • UMBC Y (13-10, L)

The team had an overall successful weekend and looks forward to competing in their next tournament at home on Nov.5th.

 

EQUESTRIAN– Equestrian was back at it this weekend competing at the Towson University IHSA Show. The team came in 4th place overall with 30 points, however had a successful showing and placed well individually. Individual results are posted below.

W. BASKETBALL– Women’s Club Basketball had an outstanding opening weekend! The team traveled to ODU and played 5 games, sweeping them all! W&M (54-19, W), Christopher Newport (56-26, W), ODU (41-39, W), Radford (37-24, W), UNCW (51-24, W). The ladies hope to keep the winning streak alive in their next set of games.

W. RUGBY– Women’s Rugby Club traveled to GW this past weekend (19-49, L). The team will look to rebound this Saturday (10/22) at University of Maryland.

FOOTBALL– Club Football hosted University of Pittsburgh this past Saturday, as their last home game of the year. The team had a packed stadium filled with family and friends to cheer them on during their family/alumni weekend game. Coming off a 3-game losing streak the team had some fire under them, and it showed as they dominated Pitt for a score of 42-12 (Win)! Xavier Savannah looked to be the MVP of the game, recording 3 touchdowns.

FENCING– Fencing Club opened their season at University of Maryland at the CHAOS Open Invitational. The team had a great showing. The most notable highlight came from Kim Wong, who placed 1st out of 26 for the Gold medal win. This was Wong’s first college tournament and the first individual Gold medal for GMU in two years!

CREW- Crew Club hosted a HUGE event this past weekend at Sandy Run Rowing Facility. In attendance were UNC, Virginia Tech, and UVA; that’s just to name a few. With great weather and some great competition the team took to the water. Listed below are results for the weekend.

W. SOCCER– Women’s Club Soccer took on John Hopkins this past Saturday. After a tough 90 minutes, GMU came up on top (2-1, W)! Goals were scored by the Blondin twins, Maggie and Katie!

M. SOCCER– Men’s Club Soccer also competed against John Hopkins and came out with a win (3-2)!

POWERLIFTING– Powerlifting Club traveled to Atlanta, GA this past week to compete at the USAPL Raw Nationals. The team had an amazing showing! Results are listed below.

JT Malaschebich: Placing 2/3 Teen 3 Division; Best Lifts: 462.9lbs Squat, 347.2lbs Bench

Highlights of the event include, Ray Williams, who became the first man to squat 1005lbs raw and holds the current squat record for the 120+ kg weight class Open Division. Alumni and MPC Coach Gabrielle Mamani re-broke her Junior American deadlift record with 398.8lbs for the 57kg weight class Junior Division.

Post Competition Report: Week of Sep. 26

 

Tennis- Tennis club had an eventful weekend at the Virginia Tech Invitational. The team competed against Virginia Tech’s B Team (5-30 L), University of Tennessee (13-30 L), Virginia Tech’s E Team (16-30 L), Virginia Tech’s C Team (22-28 L), and JMU (16-27 L). Abiral Pandey won singles matches against Virginia Tech’s C Team (6-4 W). Abiral and Amanda Smithson won mixed doubles against JMU.

M. Soccer- Men’s Club Soccer was back at it this weekend, with games against Georgetown and Maryland. The team had a hard fought battle between Georgetown and ended the game with a draw of 2-2. Unfortunately, the team lost some steam rolling into Sunday and lost to Maryland (0-6 L).

Ice Hockey- Ice Hockey started off their first set of home games for the season with back to back wins against Maryland (4-3 W) and Alvernia (2-1 W)! The team is going into this upcoming week against Liberty and ECU with a record of 3-1.

M. Volleyball- Men’s Volleyball competed in their first tournament of the year at the Battle on Byrdhill tournament, hosted by VCU. Despite being defeated in their first two matches, the team kept the games close losing to DC Lit (20-25, 22-25, 24-26) and Towson (19-25, 22-25, 24-26). The team then rallied in the finals of the silver bracket to beat Longwood University (18-25, 25-16, 15-9).

Running- Running club competed at the Princeton Invitational in NJ against multiple cross country teams. While they all raced well, Keaton Cintorino and Thomas Washington both set personal records for an 8km race. We hope to see them continue to stride for new personal bests!

Football- Club Football hosted Williamson Tech this weekend, despite a hard fought effort they lost the game 32-6. The offense was held in check for most of the game due to multiple penalties. However, in the third quarter Shareef Abulhawa connected with Xavier Savannah on a deep touchdown pass. This was Mason’s first score of the game and of the year. Despite the late effort GMU was unable to complete the comeback.

W. Rugby- Women’s rugby hosted Georgetown University this past Saturday. They won by a score of 19-0. It was an all-around dominating performance as they held off Georgetown the whole game.

W. Soccer- Women’s soccer was busy this weekend as they competed in three games. On Saturday they played Georgetown University and lost 2-1. Maggie Blondin was the goal scorer for Mason in this game. On Sunday GMU competed in back to back games against Towson University and University of Maryland. Unfortunately they lost both of these games by a score of 2-0. The team hopes to redeem themselves this weekend at Loyola (10/8.)

Field Hockey- Field Hockey Club had a noteworthy weekend filled with not only tough competition but undesirable field conditions. Despite the conditions, Mason put up a tough fight taking Loyola into overtime, and ended the game with a draw (2-2 T). Field Hockey hopes to reign in two wins this weekend at home as they host Salisbury and American at the Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament (10/8).

Club Sports Results: Week of Sep 19th

Results from the Week of Sep.19th

Ice Hockey- Ice Hockey kicked off their season at the Chilled Ponds Tournament in Chesapeake, VA. Mason dominated PSU Brandywine winning 12-0 on Saturday and lost 8-7 in overtime vs CNU. Ice Hockey looks forward to hosting their first home matches of the season this weekend against Maryland (10/1 @ 9pm) and Alvernia (10/2 @ 12:10pm).

Field Hockey- Field Hockey traveled to W&M this past weekend for a round robin. In their first game they tied 2-2 and the second game was a close battle ending with W&M on top (2-4 L). Yu Lee, Shannon Lobb, Rachel Gist, and Shannon Violetti had goals for Mason. Field Hockey hopes to redeem themselves this weekend as they face off against Loyola University (10/1 @ Loyola).

M. Soccer- Men’s Club Soccer came to compete this past weekend! After hosting two tough games last weekend they came into this weekend with hopes of redeeming themselves on their home turf. Saturday, they put up a great fight against GWU and came up just short ending the game (1-0 L). However, Sunday, the team took on Mary Washington University and piled 4 goals in the back of the net to pick up their 2nd win of the season (4-2 W)! Men’s Club Soccer will host Georgetown this Saturday at home.

W. Soccer- Women’s Club Soccer continues to rack up wins! The team competed against UMBC this past Saturday and beat the Retrievers 4-1 (W). Rhiannon Smith led the team in goals this weekend (2), followed by Leslie Flores (1) and Katy Wildeus (1).

Football- Club Football opened their season this weekend vs Ohio State. The team started off solid; Mason’s defense punished the Buckeyes offense and looked to be a well matched opponent. However, costly turnovers would prove to be the dagger for the team. Mason’s captain stated “The Mason team never stopped fighting through the adversity, and showed great sportsmanship regardless of the score.” Club Football hopes to redeem themselves this weekend as they host their first home game of the season vs Williamson College of The Trades (10/1 @ 1pm).

W. Ultimate- Women’s Ultimate Frisbee opened their season with a BANG this weekend with a round robin at Towson University! The club team went 3-1 with wins over Towson (11-4), UMBC (12-3), and American (13-5). Their only loss of the day was against American (6-8), however their second game against American proved they were the better team. Captain Rebecca Curtis was quoted, “This was our first tournament of the season and it could not have gone better. Our rookies are INCREDIBLE. We cannot wait to see what the rest of the season has in store for us.”

W. Rugby- Women’s Rugby avenged themselves this past weekend as they beat Catholic University 43-10!

Baseball- Club Baseball also opened their season this weekend at the State College Classic Tournament in State College, PA. The team played University of Pittsburgh (2-12 L), West Virginia University (0-4 L), and University of Maryland (0-5 L). Although the team did not come out of this weekend with any wins they hope to put this weekend under their belt and prepare themselves for their next games on Oct.15th. It was noted that David Mathis had a .625 batting average after all 3 games with 5 hits in 8 ABS. Also, Terry Peterson pitched a complete game in the loss against WVU and collected 6 strikeouts.

Running- Running Club competed at the Cavalier Invitational this past weekend. Keaton Cintorino, Tirik Ford, and Thomas Washington all ran personal bests in the 8K.

Softball- Club Softball hosted John Hopkins University in a three game series this past Saturday. Mason prevailed over Hopkins and went 2-1. Game 1 (5-4 W), Game 2 (4-12 L), Game 3 (8-7 W). The team took game 3 thanks to a base hit by freshmen, Karmen Caylor, to score captain, Susan Murphy for the walk off.

Ultimate- Men’s Ultimate Frisbee opened up their season with a bang! The Club team came out of the tournament with a record of 3-1, with big wins against William & Mary, Mary Washington, and Christopher Newport University.


Tennis- Tennis Club opened up their season with a Duel Match at American University. With close losses, they are hoping to redeem themselves in a couple weeks at the Virginia Tech Invitational.


Cycling- Cycling Club competed this weekend in races at JMU and UVA, but did not place.


W. Soccer- Women’s Club Soccer SWEPT their opponents this weekend! With W’s across the board against Salisbury (2-1 win) and American (1-0 win), the team is looking forward to their next game against UMBC.


M. Soccer- Men’s Club Soccer held a double header at home this weekend against Maryland (L) and Georgetown (Tie). The highlight of their weekend was their tie (2-2) against Georgetown on Sunday. The Club looks forward to hosting George Washington university this upcoming Saturday.


Trap & Skeet- Trap & Skeet opened up their season as well at University of Delaware. Our very own Derek Vacco took 1st place in the American Skeet Event, tied for 3rd in the American Trap Event, and took 2nd place in Individual overall.


Running- Running Club opened their season this past weekend sending two members to the UNC Invitational 5K. Jordan Shimer ran for a PR of 16:53 and Jeremy Schimmel ran a 20:40. Their next race will be this upcoming weekend at James Madison University.

W. Soccer– With a double header going into their opening week, Women’s Club Soccer came away with a win against Stevenson University (2-0), and a tough loss to GW (1-0).

M. Soccer– Men’s Club Soccer started their season off with a bang, taking a W against American University (2-1).

W. Rugby– Women’s Rugby made a trip to Towson University this past Saturday, and although they didn’t come back with the expected results, the captain stated, “that it was a great learning experience to prepare them for the rest of their season.”

Cycling– Cycling Club sent two athletes to compete in the Wolfbouncer All-Mountain Invitational this past weekend. Charles Coffey came away with a PR in times and Matthew Bishop put in some tough competition against the opposing schools.
