This group is open to any adult swimmer over the age of 18, including Mason students. We are a fun group of individuals of all ages and levels. Workouts are structured with participant goals and fitness levels in mind.
George Mason Masters Swimming is an inclusive program that works to meet the needs of each of its participants. We welcome competitive swimmers, fitness swimmers, or individuals who are looking for a good workout. We have participants who swim competitively, and many who also swim just for fitness and a fun stress reliever. An experienced coach and a structured session will be available at each practice.
Program Structure
- Any member must be able to show proficiency in at least two competitive strokes, as well as be able to swim without breaks for the lengths within the designated levels below. Individuals who may not be able to meet these minimum standards are encouraged to check out our amazing swim lessons programs here at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
- Each practice will have dedicated lanes for different levels of swimmers (Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3).
- Level 1 swimmers must be able to swim 50 yds comfortably without stopping
- Level 2 swimmers must be able to swim 100 yds comfortably without stopping
- Level 3 swimmers must be able to swim 200 yds comfortably without stopping
- These lanes will then be subdivided so that different lanes cover different distances and intervals. The coach will assign swimmers to a lane based on their current ability while keeping the swimmers’ personal goals in mind.
- Swimmers within the same lane will swim the same distances, strokes, and intervals, with some occasional variation.
- When everyone in the lane swims in the correct order, a five-second interval between swimmers will allow everyone to swim and turn without interference.
- If you have to slow down to keep from touching the feet of the swimmer in front of you, you are swimming a faster pace. You should touch the swimmer’s foot to let him/her know you are there. After the next rest interval, you should go before him/her. Conversely, if someone touches your foot, you should let him/her go ahead of you on the next swim.
All participants must check in at the front desk prior to the session. Fees do not include U.S. Masters Swimming membership, meet entry fees, or use of the facility outside of practice hours. Pricing is per term: September 1 - December 31, January 1 - April 30, and May 1 - July 31.
